The Engen Maths and Science Schools (EMSS) programme continues to uplift and empower young minds, equipping learners with the tools to achieve academic excellence. Leading the programme’s 2024 matriculants is Mikayla Naidoo, who was ranked as the number one top achiever among 408 matriculants nationwide. Mikayla attended the EMSS centre at Ganges Secondary School and matriculated from Durban Girls’ High School with an impressive seven distinctions, including 95% for Mathematics, 88% for Physical Science, and 92% for English.
Mikayla, now pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting at the University of Cape Town (UCT), credits the EMSS programme for refining her exam techniques and helping her adapt to the demands of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams. “Coming from a school that did not previously write government examination papers, EMSS helped me understand the various NSC examination techniques. The programme equipped me with strategic, time-saving methods to answer final exam questions accurately and efficiently,” she explains.
Her journey to academic success was shaped by discipline and perseverance. She emphasises the importance of consistent effort and strategic studying. “In matric, time is of the essence, so make the most of every moment. Start from day one and remain consistent. Doing a little every day prevents last-minute cramming and helps with long-term retention. Your results are a reflection of the time, effort, and discipline you invest in your studies,” she advises.
A Legacy of Academic Empowerment
For over 35 years, the EMSS programme has played a vital role in bridging educational gaps by providing free supplementary tuition in Mathematics, Science, and English. Supporting 1,500 learners annually across 10 centres nationwide, EMSS is dedicated to fostering academic excellence and addressing South Africa’s critical skills shortage.
Engen’s CSI Manager, Olwethu Mdabula, highlights the programme’s transformative impact. “EMSS focuses on gateway subjects, enabling learners to access STEM opportunities and contribute to South Africa’s economic growth. Mikayla’s success demonstrates how the programme transforms lives and empowers learners to achieve their dreams.”
In 2024, the programme continued to deliver exceptional results:
- 82% of EMSS learners achieved bachelor passes
- 131 bursaries were awarded to students pursuing STEM degrees aligned with Engen’s business focus
Overcoming Challenges and Staying Motivated
Mikayla’s upbringing played a crucial role in her determination to succeed. Growing up in a family that prioritised education, she witnessed her parents make significant sacrifices to ensure she and her younger brother had access to quality learning opportunities. “My parents placed education as the number one priority and exposed us to greater opportunities from a young age. I hope to make them proud and reward them for their sacrifices,” she shares.
Despite financial challenges, Mikayla remained focused, driven by her passion for learning and a strong support system. “My parents took loans to pay for my education, and I am grateful for their efforts. Their sacrifices motivated me to work harder and make the most of every opportunity.”
Reflecting on her matric year, she acknowledges the challenges of exam preparation. “Balancing revision and practice was tough. I had to read, understand, and memorise material while working through multiple past exam papers. Time constraints made it difficult to cover everything to my satisfaction, but perseverance helped me push through.”
A Bright Future with Big Aspirations
With a bright future ahead, Mikayla hopes to make an impact in her community and beyond. “I aspire to become a successful Chartered Accountant and expand my career internationally. I also want to inspire others and be a role model,” she says.
She expresses concern about the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the workforce, particularly its impact on employment. “AI is a powerful tool, but it is replacing many jobs. Despite having a strong education, there’s a risk that I may not be able to apply my knowledge or sustain myself financially. It’s something that worries me about the future.”
Mdabula reaffirmed Engen’s commitment to supporting learners, particularly those facing socio-economic challenges, by bridging educational gaps and empowering them for brighter futures. “Our focus on quality education aligns with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 4, ensuring inclusive and equitable learning opportunities for all,” she noted.
Beyond Academics: Finding Balance
Beyond academics, Mikayla values self-care and balance. “School and life can be stressful, so I make time to relax, even on busy days. I enjoy crocheting, listening to music, and immersing myself in K-dramas over weekends,” she shares.
Her message to future matriculants is simple yet profound: “Do not be afraid to ask for help or take time for yourself. Your mental and physical well-being is crucial to avoid burnout. Work hard, stay disciplined, and trust the process.”
